The Lady Irwin School Alumni Association held the Second Annual Prize Distribution Function in the Senior, Middle and Junior School of Lady Irwin School on November 21, 2008. The distinguished guests at the function were Mr. P.C. Bose, Mrs. P.C. Kasyap, Mrs. Thukral, Mrs. Yogesh Sikand and Ms. Anita Bembey.

This year’s highlight of the function was the announcement of 8 scholarships in the memory of Dr. P.C. Kashyap, a great votary for education for women. They are merit cum means scholarships, being instituted by alumnus Dr. Purnima Kashyap. A girl studying in Lady Irwin School is eligible for it after class 10 examination results. She can avail of it for five years. Two years in school and three years in college. The details of the scholarships will be put up on the website.

Dr. Usha Nair has very generously instituted the ‘Kapil Memorial Scholarship’ which is open to any of the Lady Irwin School girl for further studies in a professional College. Details of this Scholarship have been put up on the website. This year four girls will receive Rs.2000/-each as the Kapil Memorial Scholarship.

The Secretary of the Lady Irwin School Alumni Association thanked the Principal, Management and the Governing body by whose untiring efforts it has been possible to fill the vacant posts in the school.

Excerpts from the LISAA Secretary’s speech on November 21, 2008 ‘The Lady Irwin School Alumni Association is committed to the betterment of the school by working with the Principal, Management as well as the Parent Teachers Association. The Alumni Association raises funds and seeks donation. Most importantly it connects the old students of the school, all of whom have tremendous pride in having studied in this Institution.

Functions like the one today forms a bridge between the old and all of you who are studying here. Today’s function is therefore a function of the old and present students. It is by the students and it is for the students.

As you are aware LISAA has tried to effect various improvements in the school. The Gymnasium roof was repaired and painted. Doors and windows painted and latches provided. Lighting was improved and fans repaired. The website was created. Facilities like the photocopier, fax machine water purifiers, water cooler, dual desks for five classrooms. The association provided for better lighting of the classrooms and the latest addition are the durries on which you are sitting today. LISAA even got the class blackboards painted this year in the junior, middle and the senior building.

I would make a special mention of the funds provided by Mrs. Sunanda Dasgupta for improving the Chemistry and the Biology Laboratory. Mrs. Sunanda Dasgupta was the President of LISAA and unfortunately she passed away in March 2006. Mrs. Dasgupta had a long association with the school. Her mother was our Chemistry teacher and she herself and her daughter studied in this school.

In the same way that one lamp lights another and that lamp lights many others we the old students of this school hope and prey that all students passing out of this school will bring credit to their School and in their own turn take up activities for the benefit of the school’.

The Principal Mrs. Shanta Kashyap was also very pleased with the efforts made by the Lady Irwin School Alumni Association for the welfare of the school.

Nearly 400 children were awarded cash prizes in academics, art, music and sports. Children compeered the programme and it ended with a vote of thanks by the children.
